How to wear a long coat five ways

A long coat is the piece most of us wear more than anything else from October to March. Chosen well, it works with almost everything you already own. Here are five simple ways to wear yours.

1. Over tailoring

Wear it open over wide-leg trousers and a fine knit in one colour family. Matching tones from neck to ankle make the outfit look considered with very little effort.

2. With a knit dress

A midi knit dress under a long coat is warm, simple and easy to move in. Keep the hems close in length so the coat frames the dress rather than cutting it.

3. Belted

If your coat has a belt, tie it loosely at the back or knot it at the front. It gives shape on cold days when you button everything up.

4. With denim and a jumper

For weekends, pair it with straight jeans, a chunky jumper and flat boots. The coat keeps the look polished.

5. Over loungewear

On travel days, a long coat over a soft matching set looks pulled together at the airport and feels comfortable for hours.
